Pictures of Baby Cousin

Here's the pictures of Magnolia's baby cousin from the 20 week ultrasound. We've been talking about how "Aunt Sara has a baby in her tummy" a lot now that Maggie is noticing Sara's belly. The very funny thing is that Maggie thinks that Aunt Sara is hiding that baby in her pants, and she will lift Sara's shirt and try to peek in Sara's pants for that baby!! This morning she looked at Daddy's tummy, and then gave me this very quizzical look, like "Does daddy have a baby in there too?" Too funny!

Sara and Brad are waiting to find out if there little one is a girl or boy, as Zac and I did.
So here is some pics of Baby Cousin...

18 Month Old Stats

We saw Dr. Ally today for Magnolia's 18 month check-up. Right when Dr. Ally walked in she joked with me that "Well, Magnolia better be talking!" (I work with many of Dr. Ally's children that she refers for early intervention, many of which have speech/language delays). I spewed out Magnolia's current expressive language development, and Dr. Ally laughed and said, "Well good, because that's normal!"

Dr. Ally reviewed her ASQ (developmental screener), had us complete the M-CHAT (this is an Autism screener), and sat down to "play" with Maggie for a bit, just so she could get a good idea of Maggie's current development! I always wondered how Maggie would perform for someone who was assessing her development. I was quite surprised to realize I have quite the little performer! Ally was very pleased, and said, "You do know she's doing a lot of 2 year old tasks don't you?" I smiled and nodded:)

On the medical front Magnolia's ears still look perfect. Tubes are perfectly in place and doing their job. Magnolia's teeth looked great too, and Dr. Ally said they didn't even look pushed out at all with all the sucking of the bugsy. Magnolia did exceptionally well with her 2 immunizations. She cried out when she got them, but then got up like a champ to get dressed, take her coin from the nurse, and head to the ball machine to get a ball. Tonight she was a little more emotional then usual. Every time she'd look at her band-aid, she would say "owie," then start pretending to cry. I'm thinking I'll have to find a good doctor toy kit for her before her 24 month well baby!

Here are the those 18 month stats:
Weight: 22 lbs 13 oz 25%
Height: 31 1/2 inches 40%
Head Circumference: 75%

She's still on her own curve for head circumference and weight. I noticed all her pants were very short on her the last few weeks, so her surge in height wasn't too big a surprise today!

She's getting so big!!!!!
*I thought those of you who gave me advise on the bugsy situation might enjoy this picture I took this morning. We did our usual "nigh-nigh bugsy" routine, and then I find her in the corner of her room (hiding from me!!!) with two in her hand, Peppa in her other hand, and one in her mouth!*

The Thing About Bugsy

Well, most of you know how I felt about pacifiers previously to parenthood. Many of you know that I was very adamant about self-regulation not involving a "plug." Most of you also know that my daughter is frequently either sucking on a pacifier, or "bugsy" as she refers to it, or is asking for one. Let me elaborate on what happened here...

It all began with a little infant who couldn't regulate, well couldn't regulate easily that is. Any child that is in physical pain is going to have great difficulty calming themselves down, this was Maggie. Maggie's food allergy was diagnosed at 5 weeks. That entire time, and even for awhile afterward, she was in pain as her body fought against the proteins it couldn't digest. This meant a very sad, often crying, little baby girl. This also meant an often frazzled Mommy and Daddy. Definitely more so Mommy from what I remember. Magnolia would try to frantically suck anything put near her mouth, often times myself. I still remember that visit with Dr. Ally when she looked at me and said, "Melissa. Give her, the paci." Then she returned to us with two Soothie pacifiers, and that's where it all began.

So now here we are today. My daughter very frequently has a pacifier in her mouth. Some people assume that parents just offer a pacifier up to their child all the time. Magnolia will start out the day without her bugsy, and then something may happen. She may trip, she may drop something, she may get mad when she wants something or does something that is not okay. What happens next is that she INSTANTLY cries for her bugsy. I often ask her if she might be able to use her blanket, Peppa, Doudou, a cuddle, some love-love. She says "sure, I'll take all those things, WITH my bugsy." Obviously she doesn't say that exactly, but her actions and the words she does say make this quite obvious.

So where does this leave me now. Well, with a child who DEMANDS her bugsy frequently, throws them all over the house as she gets interested in something new, and who freaks out if we go somewhere and she realizes we don't have one.

So what do I want: I want Magnolia to be able to self-regulate without her pacifier now!!! I want to go somewhere and not be terrified that we don't have one. I want to do this all in a very respectful way to my daughter (I'm the one who gave her the pacifier in the first place remember).

So for all you "coaching minded professionals," "What have I tried?" Well, I've tried only letting her have it when she sleeps, or if she REALLY, REALLY needs it, letting her have it in her chair in her room, with another comfort item (I'm trying to re-direct to something else here), and at times I've just told her it isn't there right now, like if we take Boston for a walk, or run an errand. This generally results in a very dis-regulated child, for very long periods of time, and sends me back into tragic memories of her infancy with her screaming and me being unable to calm her.

So all of you out there, I'm asking for some input. I know Dr. Ally will have some input tomorrow at her 18 month appointment, but I know too many experts out there to not ask for help. I am way too emotionally attached to this issue to think rationally about anything, like I am occasionally able to do with other people's children!

And who said mother's who are child development specialists know it all?

Oh, just one more special note. She does just fine all day at school without her bugsy!
This is only the case at school though.

Vrrrrrrrrrrrrmmmmmmmmmmmm

Oh, it was only too funny, that I insisted Maggie ride in the race car at Fred Myers, to a husband who was opposed.
  • I insisted because Magnolia refuses to ride in the shopping cart if I'm anywhere near her, she would rather Mama hold her, or that she walk and hold Mama's hand---not convenient when you are trying to get some shopping done quickly.
  • Zac opposed because he insisted they were disgusting, trashing, or "red neck" as he referred to it, and they are not at all convenient to push.
Well the result was that MAMA pushed around possibly the loudest, squeakiest race car shopping cart ever. I had to back up all the way down an aisle, because there was not enough room to turn. Daddy got a good laugh in, and rolled his eyes quite a bit. Magnolia was thoroughly engaged in driving the entire time, did not demand to be held once.
She was quite the little race car driver, and I presume she will be driving a race car again soon.

There's Something About Maggie

When I got to Magnolia's school to pick her up this evening, I noticed the hair right away---who wouldn't? Chris explained, "She ate four bowls of yogurt and O's. Then she put some of the yogurt in her hair." Chris always tells me these things very matter of fact! I adore that woman for giving my little girl an environment where she's so secure with herself she can totally smear yogurt all over her head!

Well, okay Maggie. You like yogurt in your hair. That just may be your "new thing" for awhile! Along with reading I would guess. Did I mention to all of you how MUCH she's been reading lately? This I Spy book we checked out from the library has been an extra big hit. She absolutely loves searching for items in pictures of a book, and she's amazingly good at it too! She amazes us everyday!!!!

Love, love Moo!

You asked for it!

Listed below are a few details about Magnolia's current work:
  • "HAND, HAND, HAND!" She can't go anywhere not holding onto one of our hands. I wondered where this came from, until I dropped her off at school and her friend Kamlin came up to her and said "Maggie Moo! Hand!" She reached out for Maggie's hand, Maggie placed her little hand in Kamlin's and they happily walked over to the baby doll area.
  • All about books! She's always loved books, but not THIS MUCH. We are reading all the time. Usually she's asking for my hand then walking me over to her books so she can pick out one for me to read. We've been checking out lots of books from the library to feed into this extreme interest in books!
  • "BOOOOOOOSTIIIIIIIIIIIN!" Gosh, do Zac and I really sound like that??!! One of her new, and very important roles, is reprimanding her dog. She shouts out for B with this unbelievably serious tone of voice for a 17 month old, then slaps her hand on her thigh. Usually Boston doesn't come, so she huffs, then marches off to find that DOG!
  • When she's not yelling at poor B, she's making sure Boston is well fed. This means: 1. She notices Boston's bowl is empty and says "help" then points to Boston's container of food 2. Takes off the lid 3. Scoops some of the food into a small cup 4. Pours that food into Boston's bowl 5. Repeat, repeat, repeat 6. Says "all done" 7. Puts the scoop back into the container and then places the lid back onto the container (she does this completely independently people)
  • Screeching, and I mean ear piercing screeches of delight when she sees her school. Then she shouts "SCHOOL!" followed by listing all her friends names. (special note: if I list her friends names and miss one, Maggie can always tell me who I missed. There are 12 children!)

Of course there is so much more, but that's a good bit for tonight!
I sincerely apologize for my busy schedule, and promise to keep posting away as frequently as I've done the last 17 months! I now have the added perk of 4 hours of furlough leave every other Friday (a bit of sarcasm for those of you who didn't catch that), so I may actually have some time to get caught up on just about everything.

Best Wishes for a Happy 2010!

Go Joe!

Here's a short video of Magnolia at the Idaho Basketball game. She once again had a blast! She seems mesmerized by the crowd, and is always a little shocked when so many people sing the fight song, as we do at home.
She once again saw the real Joe, and couldn't keep her eyes off of him.
Oh, for those of you who haven't seen how pregnant Sara looks already, you can definitely tell in the video!
